Welcome to the official web site of the Boston Street Railway Association. We were founded in 1959 to preserve a Boston Type 5 streetcar, number 5706, which we are actively pursuing right now. In addition, as an educational non-profit organization, we preserve Boston Transit History in its many forms through our books, which we publish periodically, and our bimonthly newsletter, Roll Sign. In addition, we field many questions from the public, from transit industry authors, and from the news media. We have over 900 members from many states and foreign countries, and we invite you to join using the membership blank and description further on in this website. All of our work is done by volunteers, and there are many opportunities for those of you who are interested in our programs. Come on board, our modest annual dues are the fare, and the trip is a fascinating journey through history. Enjoy!

Traction Behind the Iron Curtain
Eric Oszustowicz will narrate a slide presentation utilizing the vast collection of the late Joseph and Richard Braun, focusing on Cold War-era photos of tram systems behind the Iron Curtain. This presentation will begin in the Soviet Union with 1967 views of Moscow in Russia, and Kiev in the Ukraine. We then move on to the tramways of Sofia (1971-74); Bucharest (1967); Sarajevo and Dubrovnik (1966); Belgrade and Subotica (1971); Prague, Krakow, and Warsaw (1967); and finally Budapest (1967). If time permits, views of ex-Third Avenue Railways cars operating in Vienna, Austria, in regular passenger service will be shown. Joseph and Richard Braun spent many years recording history. Thankfully, their goodwill and generosity has now enabled us to witness their legacy.

Please note this meeting is on the SECOND Saturday due to the Boston Trolley Meet on May 3.

Our monthly meetings are held at the Grand Lodge of Masons in downtown Boston, MA on the first or second Saturday of every month. Meetings are free of charge and are open to the general public. Each month, a brief business meeting is followed by a transit-related entertainment presentation, usually consisting of slides, videos, or other visual media.

Call us at 781-433-7015 for the latest meeting and entertainment information, including changes or
cancellations due to weather (message updated by 4PM the day of the meeting).

Restoration of "Type 5" Car # 5706

Type 5 #5706 served the Boston Elevated Railway and its successor, the Metropolitan Transit Authority, for 35 years. The top view was taken in 1958 on Huntington Avenue, while the bottom shows 5706 under its protective shelter as it awaits further restoration work.

The BSRA funds and manages the restoration of Type Five car #5706, with the intent of eventually operating the car at a museum or at other locations on special occasions.

We are actively seeking public, corporate, and member support for this long-standing project. Your tax-deductible donations to the 5706 Fund are greatly appreciated, and they will help us reach our ultimate goal of an operating streetcar!

Trespassing for any purpose in transit facilities, tunnels, and tracks is illegal and extremely dangerous.
The BSRA does not condone it in any form.

We are concerned with the actions of some local media outlets, which have published articles that tend to glorify this life-threatening activity. Such stories may encourage copycat behavior, which can result in death of serious injury.
