The Boston Street Railway Association has a long and notable history in the field of high-quality transit books and publications. Along with our bimonthly news magazine, Roll Sign, the BSRA regularly issues Bulletins, given free to all active members, covering public transit topics in Boston and New England.
For an all-time listing of BSRA Bulletins, click here.

Our most recent Bulletins include 1997's "Tremont Street Subway: A Century of Public Service," and our biggest book yet, 2003's "Streetcar Lines of the Hub - The 1940's," written by our President, Bradley H. Clarke. More information on each of these titles can be found below...

Streetcar Lines of the Hub - The 1940s
Heyday of Electric Transit in Boston

by Bradley H. Clarke | Published 2003 | 216 Pages, Hardcover, $46.95

BSRA Bulletin #23. The most detailed book ever written about Boston's streetcar lines! During World War II, streetcar ridership hit record levels and the trolley's viability was reaffirmed one last time. This book covers all 52 routes, every carhouse and station, plus Eastern Mass. lines to Stoneham and Quincy. Nearly 500 photos - many in color, which is rare for that time - plus maps and track diagrams.

Tremont Street Subway: A Century of Public Service
by Bradley H. Clarke and O. R. Cummings
Published 1997 | 64 Pages, Softcover, $15.95

BSRA Bulletin #22. Yes, Boston was the first city in America to build a subway! The streets of Boston were so congested with streetcars, that they had to be put underground. That Victorian engineering marvel is now Boston's Green Line. Text and photos cover construction of the subway, the time when streetcars shared the tunnels with rapid transit trains, and the line's many extensions and surface branches.
